Fort Pickens is the west end of Santa Rosa Island: Gulf Islands National Seashore, a Civil War–era fort, a developed campground, and Langdon Beach. It is a straightforward weekend from Navarre if you reserve a site early and do not try to day-park overnight.
Getting there from Navarre
You can stay on the island the whole way: Navarre Beach west on 399 through the seashore, into Pensacola Beach, then Fort Pickens Road. Or you can drop to US 98 and come back across the Bob Sikes Bridge. Escambia County’s page: the Bob Sikes toll is $1, collected electronically. No cash. No transponder means TOLL-BY-PLATE: still $1 per crossing plus a $2.50 administrative fee per billing cycle (once per month, not per trip). An annual Pensacola Beach pass exists for frequent users; it is a bridge pass, not a park pass.

Recreation.gov describes 137 family sites with electricity and water (20/30/50 amp) plus 40 non-electric tent sites, accessible sites, flush toilets, showers, dump station. No boat ramps in the Fort Pickens area. Book up to six months ahead. Generators: D loop only, limited hours, 60 dB. Campground electric is not for charging EVs, per NPS.
A two-day shape that works
Day one. Arrive after 1 p.m. if you are camping. Set up, then walk or drive to Langdon Beach. Lifeguards Memorial Day to Labor Day. Accessible mats and a beach wheelchair (ask at the campground registration office). Swim anywhere except within 200 feet of the fishing pier and the ferry dock. Pets are not allowed on the beach; leash (6 ft) on trails and roads. Evening: Battery Worth picnic area or a cheap dinner you packed. Pensacola Beach restaurants are easy to overspend; that is the whole budget weekend problem.
Day two. Fort Pickens itself. Park store inside the historic fort, 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m. for stamps and junior ranger booklets. Self-guided tour via the NPS app, or a ranger program if one is running. Ferry service from Pensacola and Pensacola Beach is listed Friday–Sunday, seasonal March–October, tickets at pensacolabaycityferry.com — confirm before you build a day around a boat. Fishing on the Fort Pickens pier does not require a separate license, per NPS; fishing elsewhere in the park does.
If you did not camp, you are a day-use visitor: out by gate close, no overnight parking. Do not test this.
Campground rules that surprise people
- Two vehicles per site; extras in overflow. Do not park on grass or in empty sites.
- Fires in permanent grills (charcoal) or fire rings. Dead and down wood only if you collect it; better to bring firewood and pack unused wood out. Beach campfires are prohibited on seashore beaches (with limited exceptions elsewhere in the park that do not include Fort Pickens beaches).
- Grey water dumping is prohibited. Do not wash the kayak with soap in the dunes.
- Food in vehicles. Raccoons work here.
- Golf carts, UTVs, scooters, segways: not allowed on park roads/beaches/trails (ADA mobility devices excepted as posted).

Entrance is credit card. Gate codes live in email. Download it before you lose signal on Fort Pickens Road.
