Atlantic hurricane season is June 1 through November 30 every year. Peak activity is typically mid-August through mid-October, with the National Hurricane Center citing a climatological peak around September 10. Navarre is a barrier-island / mainland split: the beach is Santa Rosa Island. Water goes over roads here. It has before.
Before you book, or before you drive
- Read the National Hurricane Center outlook: nhc.noaa.gov.
- Know the zone for the address you are sleeping at. Santa Rosa County: evacuation zone app. County EM: Emergency Management. Alerts: AlertSantaRosa.
- County FAQ: Santa Rosa does not open hurricane shelters south of Interstate 10. Mobile/manufactured home residents are advised to evacuate regardless of zone. If you rented a beach house, you are not “toughing it out.” You are blocking a road.
- Flexible lodging. A prepaid non-refundable condo for the second week of September is not a personality trait.

Santa Rosa County’s own “five things” list for residents is still the right mindset for a long weekend: know the zone, decide where you would go, own a battery NOAA radio, and do not wait for the grocery-store fight. Pack for a weekend that might lose power, not for the apocalypse
FEMA and Florida guidance for households runs to seven days or more of supplies. You are not that household if you are here three nights. You still should not be the person who needs a gas station at 9 p.m. in a tropical-storm watch.
NOAA weather radio, battery or crank
Santa Rosa County tells residents to buy one. Cell networks clog. A radio does not care about your battery percentage. Test it at home before the trip.
Water, a headlamp, a power bank
A gallon a day per person is the usual public-health planning number. For a three-day weekend, that is not a pallet; it is a case and a jug. Headlamp, not a phone flashlight. One charged power bank per adult.
Meds, paper numbers, small cash
Two-week meds is the resident standard; bring what you cannot miss plus a day. Write phone numbers on paper. ATMs and card readers want power. Small bills.
Real rain shell, not a souvenir poncho
Tropical rain is sideways. A $7 poncho is a plastic bag with a hood. A light waterproof jacket with a zipper earns its keep in a non-hurricane squall too.
Soft cooler that can be food storage if the condo fridge dies
Ice is a plan. A bag of groceries that must be cooked tonight is not a plan.
What not to pack for “hurricane season vibes”
- A generator for a three-night vacation rental you do not control. If the house has one, the house has rules. Carbon monoxide kills people in garages.
- Beach tents you intend to leave up in a tropical storm. County leave-no-trace plus physics.
- A “we’ll see how it looks Saturday” attitude after a hurricane watch is issued for the Panhandle.
If you are already here and the forecast turns
Follow county orders, not a group chat. Leave early, short distance, inland and north — Santa Rosa’s own advice is tens of miles, not hundreds, unless you have a better place. Do not drive toward the beach to “see the waves.” People die doing that, and they clog the only roads the island has.
