Every May someone in a Navarre rental asks where the pirate parade is “on the beach here.” It isn’t. Billy Bowlegs belongs to Fort Walton Beach: downtown, the Landing on Brooks Street, then Eglin Parkway for the torchlight parade. You drive east. You walk. May on the Emerald Coast is already hot.

Costume optional. Water is not. Neither is a plan to park and walk.

Start here, not a Facebook rumor

Parking, heat, what to bring

The official site, on the day we checked, did not post a 2026 parking fee, a shuttle map, or a gate charge for the Landing. So we are not inventing one. Treat it like a downtown festival: you will walk farther than the costume suggested, the asphalt will be hotter than the Sound, and you should not expect to leave a wagon overnight on anyone’s beach.

Water, not a pirate mug

May sun on pavement. A gallon jug in the car beats discovering the food-truck line is not hydration.

Shoes you can walk in

Parade route and downtown blocks. Flip-flops are a choice, not a strategy, if you are standing on Eglin at 7 p.m. with a kid on your shoulders.

Light rain jacket

May on this coast dumps and then acts innocent. A jacket you will actually carry, not a trash bag from a vendor.

If you add a beach day

That is a separate trip to a separate town’s sand. Wagon and low shade: wagon, shelter. Do not drag a 10×10 to the Landing and expect applause.

Later we may buy this kind of gear back before you fly. Not running yet. The plan.

Picaridin (20%)

Dusk at the Landing is Sound-adjacent. Midges do not care that you wore stripes.
