Blackwater River State Park sits inland from Navarre, in the longleaf and magnolia country near Holt. The official Florida State Parks page describes a 590-acre park on one of the more pristine sand-bottom rivers in the country — dark water, pale bars, paddling, camping, and short trails. It is a half-day or overnight from Navarre, not a substitute for Gulf swimming.

What the river actually feels like
The water is tea-colored from tannins, not dirty. The bottom is sand. In summer it is a tube-and-kayak scene when levels cooperate. After heavy rain the river rises fast, wood moves, and local liveries sometimes shut down. Treat any social-media “it’s always easy Class I” claim as marketing. Check the USGS gauge near Baker (site 02370000) and call the park or a current outfitter the morning you put in.
The packing list that matches this park
The park does not hand you a branded merch list. This is the kit that matches the place: a tannin river, a shady campground, insects, and an honor box.
Cash, small bills
Honor box. Exact change. A $4 entry is a miserable surprise if you only have a card. Florida State Parks is explicit: correct change is required.
Closed-toe water shoes
Sandbars are friendly. The wood in the river is not. Cheap foam clogs float away. A snug water shoe you can hike a short trail in is enough.
PFD you will actually wear
If you paddle, Florida treats the kayak or canoe as a vessel. One wearable U.S. Coast Guard–approved life jacket per person; children under 6 must wear it while underway. A whistle. White light if you somehow stay out late — you should not.
Dry bag, not a “water resistant” tote
Phones die in tannin water the same as in salt. One small roll-top dry bag for keys and phone. A bigger one if you are camping.
Bug plan, not a citronella candle
River bottoms and dusk are midge and mosquito country. See the no-see-um guide for EPA-registered actives. Pack long sleeves for evening even in August.
Water and a way to carry trash out of day-use sandbars
There is a campground convenience note on third-party campground listings (ice, firewood). Do not assume a sandbar has a can. Pack water. Pack a trash bag.
Camping notes
Reserve through the Florida State Parks system (online or 800-326-3521). Florida residents can book campsites up to 11 months out; non-residents 10 months. Pets are allowed in designated campgrounds, not on beaches or playgrounds, with a maximum of four pets per site statewide. Alcohol is limited to reserved overnight accommodations and certain reserved indoor/pavilion contracts — not the river bank as a public picnic.
Florida residents 65+ or with qualifying disability documentation get 50% off the base campsite fee; reservation and utility fees are excluded. Bring the paperwork.
