People say “Perdido” the way they say “the beach,” as if it were one parking lot. It is not. From Navarre this is a longer westbound day — through Gulf Breeze and Pensacola, then out Highway 292 — so it is worth knowing which gate you are aiming at.
1. Big Lagoon State Park (Florida State Parks)
Mainland park, 704 upland acres between the mainland and Perdido Key, facing the Intracoastal / Big Lagoon. Swimming, paddling, trails, an observation tower, camping. Official hours: 8 a.m. Central until sunset daily. Late campers call 850-492-1595 before close for the gate combination.
| Vehicle, 2–8 people | $6 |
|---|---|
| Single-occupant vehicle | $4 |
| Walk-in / bike / extra passenger | $2 |
| Boat launch + entrance | $12 (2–8 with a boat) or $10 (one person with a boat) |
| Camping | $20/night + tax + $6.70 reservation fee + $7 utility for RV-type units (not tent camping) |
This is a lagoon park, not a Gulf-front surf beach. If you came for emerald water and open Gulf, you are at the wrong gate — on purpose, if you wanted birds, a paddle, and a quieter campground. Pets follow statewide state-park rules: campground yes (with limits), beaches and bathing areas no.

2. Perdido Key State Park (Florida State Parks)
Gulf-front, undeveloped beach on Perdido Key. Hours: 8 a.m. until sunset, 365 days. $3 per vehicle (up to eight), honor box, exact change. $2 walk-in/bike. Address listed: 15301 Perdido Key Drive, Pensacola, FL 32507.
This is the cheap Gulf day if Johnson Beach is at capacity. Amenities are state-park simple. Bring water, shade, and a wagon. Honor box means cash discipline, same as Blackwater.

3. Johnson Beach / Perdido Key Area (Gulf Islands National Seashore)
NPS area on the east end of Perdido Key, Johnson Beach Road. This is the developed national-seashore beach: pavilions, restrooms, a small boat launch, the Perdido Key Discovery Trail, summer lifeguard, beach wheelchair at the entrance station. It uses the same seashore entrance pass as Fort Pickens and Opal: $25 vehicle / $20 motorcycle / $15 per person, seven days, or the $45 annual. Credit card only.
| Hours (NPS, updated Mar 9, 2026) | March 1–Oct 31: 5 a.m.–8 p.m. Nov 1–Feb 28: 5 a.m.–6 p.m. |
|---|---|
| Overnight parking | Not permitted |
| Parking | Designated lots only. NPS: no roadside parking, no RV parking, no parking in the sand. First come, first served. Area can close at capacity April–September; arrive early. |
| Beyond the turnaround | ~1.5 miles to the turnaround; east of that is foot or boat. Boat-in backcountry camping only at the island end, with NPS backcountry rules. |
| Pavilions | Reservable; NPS lists $200. Gatherings over 26 people need permits. |
| Pets | Not on the beach |
Some travel roundups list Johnson Beach as 5 a.m.–9 p.m. in summer. The NPS Perdido Key page we used says 5 a.m.–8 p.m. March–October. We are going with NPS.

Which one should you pick from Navarre?
- Want Gulf water, restrooms, and you already have a seashore pass from Fort Pickens this week → Johnson Beach.
- Want Gulf water and you only have three dollars in singles → Perdido Key State Park.
- Want a campsite, a kayak launch, and birds → Big Lagoon.
Do not assume the $3 honor box covers Johnson Beach. Do not assume the $25 NPS pass covers Big Lagoon. Different agencies.

Unclear: secondary sites list Johnson Beach closing at 9 p.m. in peak months; NPS lists 8 p.m. Pavilion dollar amount should be re-checked if you are actually renting one.
